Wordless Wednesday: Lovell Hugh Pemberton

"Lovell H. Pemberton , Seaman sailed the great lakes April 17, 1878"

This is my great-great-grandfather, Lovell Hugh Pemberton. I got this picture from my cousin, Stacy, who got it from our great-aunt, Barbara (Pemberton) Post. Lovell was Aunt Barb's grandfather. April 17, 1878 or 1879 is supposedly his birthday, according to his death record, his dad's pension file, his obit, and his WWI draft card, and family sources. However, his birth record states 14 Jan 1878. Strange. And I can't seem to find when he sailed the Great Lakes. Possibly before he married in 1902. I can't seem to find him in the 1900 census. Maybe he was off sailing.

  1. I'm from Cleveland, Ohio. I wonder if he sailed in Lake Erie? I love his name!

  2. Hi, Linda! I know that Lovell's brother-in-law/first cousin, Hayes Finkle, and many of Hayes' brothers, worked for the Pittsburgh Steamship Company and lived in Cleveland. This was when Hayes registered for the WWI draft in 1918. Hayes lived in Cleveland in 1910 and was a ship carpenter at that time. Hayes was Lovell's first cousin but also married Lovell's younger sister, Myrtle Lavina Pemberton. In fact, they married twice, both times in Canada! Strange! I have a feeling it was in Canada due to first cousins not being able to legally wed in Michigan.

  4. My grandfather was a captain on the Great Lakes also, from 1905-1950. There is a way to check this. Give me some time and I will go to a library in the area that may have this info.
